Enjoying traditional restaurant cuisine, listening to Naha-West performances—this is how to have an unforgettable time in Beitou

For the older generation, when it comes to Beitou, the most memorable aspects are the local trio: hot springs, traditional restaurant cuisine, and Naha-West music. From May 17 to May 19, the Beitou Traditional Restaurant Cuisine Culture Food Festival will be held on the south side of the Xinbeitou MRT Station. Over the three-day event, in addition to nostalgic Naha-West performances and guidance from traditional cuisine master Huang Dexing on plating techniques, there will also be mini versions of classic dishes such as Golden Sand Tofu, Crispy Bite-Sized Delights, Sakura Shrimp Fried Rice, and Golden Sand Shrimp Balls—all available for just 10 NT coins. On May 18 and 19, there will also be guided tours of Beitou culture led by professional guides from the Beitou Cultural Foundation, allowing visitors to recall the area’s heritage through all five senses.

This year’s event will not only feature nostalgic Naha-West performances and outdoor screenings of retro films that take you back to the grandmother’s era, but also a comeback performance by Zhou Zihan, the original singer of “Kiss and Tears.” The main highlight—traditional restaurant cuisine—will see guidance from “Taiwanese Cuisine Grandmaster” Huang Dexing and food expert Liang Youxiang on professional plating techniques. They’ll show the public how to transform ordinary ingredients into stunningly beautiful dishes using creative presentation skills. Additionally, from 10:30 AM to 8:00 PM on May 18 and 19, the “10 NT Culinary King” event will offer delicately portioned traditional dishes, each available for just 10 NT coins. What used to cost 10,000 to 18,000 NT per table at restaurants can now be enjoyed in its entirety for just 100 NT.

Accommodation providers in Beitou’s hot spring district are also offering special deals to complement the event. The Two-Person Inn is offering a traditional cuisine set meal including five dishes such as Pan-Fried Anchovy and Duck Egg, Fermented Tofu and Wine-Lees Marinated Pork Ribs, and Chicken with Scallion Oil, all for a discounted price of 380 NT. Weekday lodging coupons are also available starting at up to 76% off. The Lih Wedding Banquet Hall—Beitou Branch is offering discounts on Hong Kong-style dim sum, including Shrimp Dumplings for 58 NT and Steamed Twelve Lava Buns for 71 NT, plus classic Cantonese dishes all at a uniform price of 168 NT per dish. The Shuimei Hot Spring Resort is offering discounted packages on lodging, hot spring entry, dining, and spa services, with savings of up to 55%. The Spring Hotel is offering deals such as a second chef’s recommended set meal for just 15 NT, 15% off on semi-self-service afternoon tea, and up to 50% off on weekday lodging.

Visitors who want to explore Beitou on their own during the event can check out must-visit spots like the Beitou Hot Spring Museum, Beitou Library, Beitou Cultural Museum, Meiting, Geothermal Valley, and the Civic Center. In addition, Beitou’s unique historical transit option—motorbike taxi service—is still available around the Xinbeitou MRT Station. Just negotiate a price with one of the few remaining operators, and you can experience zipping around the hills on a motorbike, exploring all the sights without having to walk.
