Jiaoxi Household Registration Office—A Surprisingly Surreal Government Building
Walking along Jiaoxi’s streets, it’s hard to miss the futuristic and eye-catching Jiaoxi Household Registration Office and Health Center. Architect Huang Shengyuan, who has deep ties to Yilan, used twisted massive pillars and protruding floor slabs to create a dynamic sense of space within what would otherwise be a rigid office building. The overall design incorporates the idea of “wandering through the mountains and forests,” with no clear boundaries between floors, breaking away from conventional square structures. Visitors coming here for official business feel as if they are strolling through mountain trails—an oddly delightful experience.
Whether using exposed steel bars as stair railings or installing columns covered with extensive blue tiles, the space showcases experimental use of various materials. The office surroundings lack conspicuous walls, making it easily accessible for visitors from out of town.
