The hot air balloon craze that has swept Taiwan over the past two years has attracted numerous netizens, with many queuing up from midnight just to experience those dreamlike moments high above the ground. But in 2016, U.S.-based World View Enterprises will launch an extraordinary hot air balloon journey. This time, it won’t just be a tethered high-altitude experience — passengers will board a specially designed hot air balloon to soar 30 kilometers above the Earth’s surface and gaze down at the planet.

This FAA-approved flight experience, priced at $75,000 (approximately NT$2.22 million), is set to officially debut as early as 2016. Passengers aboard the custom-designed hot air balloon will ascend to an altitude of 30 kilometers within 1.5 to 2 hours and remain there for two hours. Without having to wear bulky spacesuits, travelers can effortlessly enjoy the vast blackness of space and the breathtaking curvature of Earth. However, since the altitude reached does not qualify as outer space, this hot air balloon journey can only be described as a “near-space” experience — meaning passengers won’t get to experience weightlessness.
