“An Autumn Afternoon” is the last film directed by Yasujiro Ozu before his death. It was selected as one of the top ten films by Kinema Junpo and portrays the psychological state of people in their later years through subtle humor. The father-daughter relationship depicted in the film is sincere and profound, deeply moving all viewers. While creating “An Autumn Afternoon,” Ozu experienced the loss of his mother. He was 59 years old that year and wrote in his diary about his feelings: “Spring has come to the valley, cherry blossoms bloom like clouds; but here, fixed gazes, the taste of saury — even the flowers seem melancholy, and the sake tastes bitter.” After completing this film, Ozu passed away. That day, December 12, 1963, was Ozu’s birthday.
The internationally most admired master Yasujiro Ozu has influenced countless renowned directors both domestically and abroad. Countless filmmakers have paid tribute to him, including Ang Lee, Jia Zhangke, and Hou Hsiao-hsien, all of whom are his fans. Shunji Iwai directed “Swallowtail,” a tribute to Ozu; in 2004, Hou Hsiao-hsien commemorated the centennial of Ozu’s birth and collaborated with Zhu Tianwen to create “Café Lumière”; this year, director Yoji Yamada also paid homage to Ozu’s masterpiece “Tokyo Story” by filming “Tokyo Family.” German master Wim Wenders even called Ozu “the most sacred and devout treasure in the history of cinema.” This year, marking the 50th anniversary of Ozu’s passing, a commemorative project has been launched. Following “Tokyo Story,” another classic masterpiece, “An Autumn Afternoon,” is being released in a brand-new digital restoration in a limited Taiwanese run, allowing both new and veteran audiences to experience the master’s charm on the big screen.
The story of “An Autumn Afternoon” revolves around Hirayama (played by Chishu Ryu), who has two sons and one daughter. After his wife’s death, his eldest son marries and becomes independent but often comes home to borrow money from his father. His daughter, Setsuko (played by Shima Iwashita), takes care of her father and brother’s daily lives and never dares to bring up her own marriage. Hirayama gets used to this life, finding happiness in his daughter’s considerate care. However, at a class reunion, he meets his teacher and learns that the teacher’s once beautiful daughter has remained unmarried to take care of him. This makes him suddenly realize that his own daughter is of marriageable age, and if she doesn’t marry now, they might end up like the teacher and his daughter. Watching his daughter finally find a good match, the old father cannot hide his deep and profound sense of reluctance and loss...
