Kapok, known as kapuk or kapok in Malay, is a sacred tree of the Siraya Pingpu people. When the kapok blossoms, it is also known as the “year change,” which is the time when the Pingpu people celebrate the New Year. The Pingpu people love kapok not only for its beauty but also because its blooming serves as a kind of folk calendar, marking the timing for spring plowing, summer tending, autumn harvest, and winter storage. In Lin Chuh-pi, Baihe District, Tainan, kapok trees are in full bloom every March and April, with bright red blossoms hanging from the straight country roads like something out of a fairyland, making it a popular spot for photographers.
