Major Survey on Travel Essentials: Asians Fear Forgetting Their Phones, Westerners Rely on Credit Cards

What do netizens fear most when traveling abroad? In February 2014, global online hotel booking platform Agoda.com conducted an online survey of over 50,000 Agoda customers from around the world, asking them to choose the most indispensable item when traveling. The survey results showed that Asian travelers are most worried about being without their phones while abroad, while Western travelers fear not having their credit cards the most.

The survey results revealed that as many as 45% of Asian travelers said “phone” is the most essential travel item, followed by “credit card” at 29%. Interestingly, the answers from Western travelers were markedly different. Compared to Asia, European and American travelers consider credit cards far more important than phones — 47% of European travelers and 44% of American travelers said they fear forgetting their credit cards the most, while only 19% of Western travelers chose the phone.

Breaking it down by nationality, Taiwanese travelers share the same preference as other Asians — they can’t go without their phones. However, Japanese travelers differ from other Asians, with 38% choosing credit cards and only 28% selecting phones. France presented the most extreme case, where 58% of respondents chose credit cards, and only 9% said they needed their phones.
