Four Taiwanese travelers recently went on a self-driving trip in Kyushu, Japan, but tragically crashed into a concrete wall at a curve on the highway from Uki City, Kumamoto Prefecture, to Kagoshima, resulting in one fatality and two injuries. In recent years, self-driving tours have become increasingly popular among Taiwanese travelers in Japan. 1. Avoid driving while fatigued; if possible, prepare a second driver to take turns behind the wheel
Jiu Xiong suggests that self-driving itineraries should not be too packed and must include ample rest time. Ideally, take a break every hour, and prepare a second driver to alternate driving duties.

2. Everyone in the car — both front and back seats — must wear a seatbelt

3. Stay focused when driving on highways
Although the scenery along the way is beautiful, it’s risky to admire the view or chat with the passenger while driving. It’s recommended to stay focused and keep an eye on road conditions at all times.

4. Don’t accelerate immediately when the light turns green
Many Taiwanese drivers, whether in cars or on motorcycles, tend to accelerate as soon as the traffic light turns green. But don’t bring this habit to Japan — drive slowly forward to stay safe.

5. Don’t stay in the passing lane (inner lane) for too long
When driving on Japanese roads, avoid staying in the passing lane for extended periods. Not only can this cause traffic issues, but you might also get fined by plainclothes police if caught.
