Spring is just around the corner, and Shirakawa-go will soon shed its thick blanket of snow. What was once a fairytale-like winter town transforms into a spring paradise. In springtime, Shirakawa-go is covered in fresh greenery, dotted with wildflowers, and accented with delicate pink cherry blossoms nestled among the houses — a breathtakingly beautiful sight.

Located at the foot of the mountains in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan, the Shirakawa-go Gassho-style settlement is surrounded by hills and dotted with rice fields. It is famous for preserving the historic wooden buildings that have been passed down since the Tokugawa shogunate and Edo period, maintaining traditional Japanese architectural techniques and village culture. Designated as one of Japan’s World Heritage Sites in 1995, the village draws countless visitors eager to witness its rare and precious “pristine rural mountain scenery.”
