One of New York’s most intriguing theaters, the historic Brooklyn Academy of Music's Kings Theatre, makes its comeback

After lying dormant for 40 years, the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, New York, has reopened with a dazzling new look following two years of renovation and reconstruction, bringing back the glamorous theater nights of its heyday. Opened in 1929, Kings Theatre features a nostalgic French architectural style with lavish and dazzling decor, and was once ranked among the “five New York theaters people most want to explore.”

Kings Theatre, with its ornate decorations, evokes the splendor of the Palace of Versailles and the Paris Opera House. For many longtime New Yorkers, this theater represents shared memories of their youth—perhaps where they first fell in love with movies or had a thrilling first date.

To restore the theater to its former glory, a two-year reconstruction project was undertaken. The original 3,600-seat capacity was reduced by 400 to allow for wider aisles. The theater’s dome carvings, gold leaf embellishments, and crystal chandeliers were meticulously restored. The salon-style lobby was crafted with American walnut and pink marble to create a richly colorful and opulent atmosphere. Carpets, curtains, tapestries, and tassels were all recreated based on old photos of the theater. After the expansion, the stage became larger, giving the entire venue a more majestic and grand appearance. On opening night, a lavish concert was held, featuring legendary performer Diana Ross, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the reborn Kings Theatre.
