Kaohsiung sees its first giant water lilies—three kids can sit on them without sinking!

The Kaohsiung City Government’s Tourism Bureau has introduced "giant water lilies" to Lotus Pond for the first time, with successful cultivation now allowing visitors to admire the magnificent sight of these lilies covering the pond’s surface, in addition to visiting Tainan for lotus viewing. Recently, in conjunction with the current peak butterfly season at Jinshi Lake Butterfly Garden, the Kaohsiung City Government has launched an "Admire Lotus & Butterflies" urban mini-trip, letting everyone enjoy an ecological excursion to Lotus Pond and Jinshi Lake Butterfly Garden during short holidays.

This year, the Kaohsiung City Tourism Bureau planted "giant water lilies" for the first time in the lotus pond next to the cable waterskiing area on the south side of Lotus Pond. Currently, the lilies are in full bloom, with leaf diameters reaching up to 150 cm, leaving visitors amazed. Giant water lilies, belonging to the water lily family, are aquatic plants known for their giant disc-shaped leaves, varied flower colors, and rich fragrance. Their leaves float on the water surface, with diameters of 1 to 3 meters, leaf edges curling upwards by 7–10 cm. Most remarkably, the lily pads can support the weight of three children (50–70 kg), making for a very fun experience.However, for safety reasons, the giant water lilies in Lotus Pond are currently not open for public sitting and are only available for viewing and photography.

Besides visiting Lotus Pond to see the giant water lilies, the butterfly garden at Jinshi Lake boasts rich butterfly species in summer, making it Taiwan’s largest netted butterfly garden, where you can observe over a thousand butterflies from 30 species including swallowtails, whites, brush-footed butterflies, and blues. Take advantage of this great season for admiring lotuses and butterflies in summer and plan an “urban mini-trip” to Lotus Pond and Jinshi Lake!
