The period from April to August each year is the prime season for the blue tears phenomenon in Matsu, where the coastline emits a faint blue glow with the crashing waves—a dreamlike, fantastical scene that is one of the most unmissable sights of summer. A similarly mysterious blue light spectacle also occurs from March to June each year along the coast of Toyama Bay in Japan, except here the blue glow is not caused by blue tears but by countless gatherings of bioluminescent firefly squid.
