North Taiwan’s Tallest Bridge: Zhongzheng Bridge Becomes a Stunning Landmark

The Zhongzheng Bridge, which connects the transportation of towns and cities such as Zhubei, Xionglin, and Zhudong, officially opened to traffic on the 17th. In addition to significantly shortening travel time between the three areas, the bridge, standing at a height of 83.5 meters, has also become the tallest bridge in northern Taiwan.

Zhongzheng Bridge has a total length of 855.3 meters and a width of 30 meters. It draws inspiration from the Ming Dynasty artist Tang Yin’s work “Bamboo in the Wind.” The asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge design reduces the number of piers, minimizing the impact of river erosion on the bridge’s structural safety. The main bridge tower stands 83.5 meters tall, with its foundation embedded 28 meters deep into the riverbed, making it the highest bridge structure in northern Taiwan. Originally opened at the end of 1981, Zhongzheng Bridge later faced structural safety concerns due to repeated typhoons washing down large amounts of sediment and debris from upstream, resulting in an 80-meter section of the bridge deck collapsing and being damaged. In 2014, the Hsinchu County Government initiated a reconstruction project. After a year of renovation, the bridge has now made a stunning comeback with a completely renewed look.
