Martin Dyrvang, a student from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, joined National Taiwan University’s “Taiwan Natural Treasures Map” immersion program. He used a drone to capture mountain and forest landscapes in Xitou and edited them into a video. This foreigner’s perspective on “seeing Taiwan” is equally stunning.

This year, the Ministry of Education piloted the “Outstanding Foreign Youth Immersion Program in Taiwan,” where universities launched “composite learning programs” to invite international youth to experience Taiwan’s education, academia, and industries, with the aim of encouraging further study or research in Taiwan. A total of 15 international students participated in NTU’s “Taiwan Natural Treasures Map” immersion program, interning for a month at five forest centers including Xitou, Heshè, and Taiping Mountain. Participants shared their experiences in Taiwan through text and photos.

26-year-old Martin enjoys traveling and often uses drones to record landscapes from high above. For this immersion program, he wanted to introduce Taiwan from a unique angle. After being assigned to Xitou, Martin frequently used his drone to film panoramic views of the forests. The weather in Xitou is unstable and often rainy, which added difficulty to the drone filming. He compiled the footage into a 3-minute and 10-second video, which he posted on his blog “Taiwan from above” to promote Taiwan to the world.

On his blog, Martin mentioned that Xitou’s mountain forests resemble the Forest Moon of Endor from “Star Wars” and the scenes from “Jurassic Park.” In addition to filming Xitou from the air, Martin also captured footage of NTU’s library, Shuiyuan dormitory, Zuìyuè Lake, and Fuhe Bridge.
