New Year's Eve countdown is definitely the highlight of year-end celebrations, and everyone goes all out to plan the most unforgettable night to welcome the new year. Hotel booking website Hotels.com surveyed popular hotel destinations searched by people in Taiwan during the New Year's Day holiday period on Taiwanese websites and found that Taipei bumped Tokyo, Hong Kong, and other popular Asian destinations from the top spot, claiming the No. 1 place on the nation’s New Year’s Eve wish list.

In addition, domestic cities such as Kaohsiung, Taichung, and New Taipei City also made the list. Among them, Yilan, Nantou, and Taitung saw triple-digit increases in search rates, showing that domestic short trips were a popular choice for this New Year’s holiday. According to Hotels.com’s 2015 search ranking, major domestic cities performed exceptionally well overall, with more than half of the top 10 destinations being within Taiwan. Taipei topped the list as the most-searched city for New Year’s, demonstrating its irreplaceable charm in the hearts of Taiwanese. Other popular choices like Kaohsiung, Taichung, and New Taipei ranked fourth, sixth, and eighth respectively.
