Daikanyama T-Site, once named one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, is a popular attraction for many Taiwanese visitors to Tokyo. With its design-forward space and warm wooden interiors, it combines reading, coffee, and music—life elements that make it a place where you’ll never feel bored no matter how long you stay. If you like this concept, don’t forget to visit the city of Takeo in Saga Prefecture, where there’s a library redesigned and operated by the same company behind T-Site. Its lofty space and brand-new reading experience leave a deep impression on every visitor.

In 2012, the mayor of Takeo City launched a library revitalization plan and partnered with Japan’s “Culture Convenience Club” (CCC), the parent company of the bookstore once named the world’s most beautiful—Daikanyama T-Site. In April 2013, the library reopened after a major renovation. The project involved a large-scale transformation of the venue, including the introduction of an open-stack collection of up to 200,000 books for browsing and borrowing. Space was also allocated for Starbucks and T-Site, allowing visitors to enjoy coffee and light meals while reading. If they find a book they love, they can purchase it directly from the bookstore. This approach completely changed the traditional, rigid image of a library, turning reading into a dynamic cycle and offering people the wonderful atmosphere of a reading lifestyle. Every weekend, families, couples, and groups of friends flock here to enjoy a relaxing time.

This experimental renovation may have raised doubts about its effectiveness, but the results have been highly positive. Within six months of reopening, the library welcomed over 500,000 visitors, averaging at least 2,800 visitors per day—more than double the previous numbers. Book loans reached 300,000 volumes, marking an impressive achievement. Beyond boosting the local reading culture, the buzzworthy library has also attracted many tourists, with nearly 40% of visitors coming from outside the area specifically to see this uniquely designed library.
