Grand Opening of the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum: Must-Know Reservation Tips

The highly anticipated Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum officially began trial operations on December 28, 2015. For the first three months, free admission was available by reservation. Additionally, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on the opening day, residents of Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan counties were invited to enter with tickets. These limited-quantity tickets required visitors to present identification confirming their place of residence and queue for them. Ticket collection began on the afternoon of December 27, with a limit of two tickets per person and a total of 1,000 tickets available, on a first-come, first-served basis.

The opening of the Southern Branch has been the talk of the town, including the fact that many areas of the complex were still under construction. Therefore, visitors should pay special attention to safety and avoid entering construction zones. Reservations for visits were fully booked through January 31, 2016. Reservations for February visits began at midnight on January 20, 2016. Those who made reservations must check in during their designated time slot; reservations will be void if visitors fail to collect their tickets within 20 minutes of their scheduled time.

No online modifications or cancellations can be made after 12:00 PM the day before the visit. For groups of fewer than nine people, individual reservations are required. The last entry time is 4:00 PM (the museum closes at 5:00 PM). Visitors wishing to fully explore the Southern Branch should pay close attention to the time. Starting at midnight on the 20th of each month, reservations for the following month open; those planning future visits should keep an eye out.

The opening of the Southern Branch has featured numerous events. On December 27, a lighting ceremony was held, dazzling visitors with beautifully illuminated displays under the night sky. On December 28, the opening event was jointly promoted by President Ma Ying-jeou and movie star Jackie Chan, making it one of the most significant cultural and tourism events of the end of 2015.
