New Spot in Tamsui: “Former Residence of Dōta Eikichi” Opens with Strong Japanese Flavor

Check Out This New Attraction in Tamsui Now ! The hinoki wood Japanese-style architecture and serene front and back yards are no longer just scenes from Japanese dramas. After more than a year of preservation and restoration work, the “Former Residence of Dōta Eikichi, Former Tamsui Street Chief” is expected to officially open to the public in mid-2016.

The “Former Residence of Dōta Eikichi, Former Tamsui Street Chief,” designated as a municipal historic site in New Taipei City, is not only the first Japanese residence in Tamsui to be listed as a historic site, but also the first private home in Taiwan connected to a running water supply. The entire property covers approximately 140 pyeong, with the building itself around 28 pyeong. The roof tiles retain the traditional black cultural tiles, while the roof structure uses traditional wooden beams. The foundation of the building is elevated and hollowed out, providing a certain level of moisture-proofing effect for Tamsui’s rainy climate—evidence that the local environmental characteristics were considered during the initial construction.

Dōta Eikichi was originally an entrepreneur who came to Taiwan. He served as Tamsui Street Chief (equivalent to the modern-day Tamsui District Chief) from 1930 to 1933, during which he promoted road widening and facility additions in Tamsui, rebuilt the library, and established schools, among other public infrastructure projects. The private residence located at No. 19 Majei Street was built in 1934. Due to its higher elevation, it offers natural views of Guanyin Mountain and the Tamsui River, and is close to popular historic sites such as Hongmao Castle and the Little White House, making it a great spot for leisurely strolls and exploring scenic charm.
