Take notes on Japan’s first five major cherry blossom festivals and set off

As spring approaches, the most beautiful cherry blossoms will gradually bloom. Japan, the top cherry blossom destination for Taiwanese travelers, typically sees cherry blossoms blooming from late March to early April. However, there are some places where you can see cherry blossoms as early as January or February, along with cherry blossom festivals and other events. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy the early spring cherry blossoms.

The earliest place in Japan where cherry blossoms bloom is Okinawa, where they gradually start blooming from around late January, moving from the northern part of the main island southward. The cherry blossoms in Okinawa are a variety called Beni-shidare-zakura (also known as Kanhi-zakura), which have bell-shaped flowers that bloom downward, with colors ranging from light peach pink to deep pink. A certain level of cold is required for the blossoms to bloom, so in Okinawa, they begin blooming in the mountains in the north, then spread southward about one to two weeks later. Cherry blossom festivals are held across the region. Unlike the usual Japanese custom of enjoying cherry blossoms under the trees with friends while drinking, in Okinawa, people prefer to stroll and admire the blossoms.
