CNN selects 2016's new city landmarks — two Taipei buildings make the list

Cable News Network (CNN) recently announced the most anticipated new urban landscapes of 2016. Among the nine selected buildings, two are in Taiwan: the new Shilin landmark “Taipei Performing Arts Center” and the luxury residential building “Tower of Infinity (Tao Zhu Yin Yuan)” in Xinyi District.

Located in Shilin, the “Taipei Performing Arts Center” was designed by architects Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). The avant-garde structure features a square main building supporting a massive floating sphere, making it highly eye-catching. It is expected to be completed in mid-2016. Meanwhile, the luxury residential building “Tao Zhu Yin Yuan” in Taipei’s Xinyi District was designed by renowned French architect Vincent Callebaut. The spiral-shaped building features extensive green balconies and gardens, resembling a vertical forest in the city. It also incorporates systems for organic waste and water recycling as well as solar power generation, aiming to become one of the world’s most eco-friendly buildings.
