The Tokyo-based photographer Kawashima Kotori, who has been recognized with the Kimura Ihei Photography Award, is holding another photography exhibition in Taiwan again this time around. His latest work, “Star,” follows his previous series “My Little Sister in the Future.” Centered on Taiwan, the project took three years, 70,000 film frames, over 30 trips, and 60,000 kilometers of travel back and forth between Taiwan and Japan. Over a long period, he documented ordinary people, animals, and street scenes across Taiwan, capturing every touching moment and the most naturally beautiful scenery.

The title of the photography book “Star” not only implies that “every person in Taiwan is a shining star,” but also draws on the Japanese description of a “bright, shining star” to convey that “Taiwan is a bright, shining star.”

In addition, the exhibition venue, with the boundary-less characteristics of the Chi Museum, allows indoor and outdoor spaces to flow into one another. Walking through the venue feels as natural and approachable as strolling through Taiwan’s streets and alleys. Kawashima Kotori’s works feel like the everyday people, things, and scenes encountered in all corners of Taiwan — simple yet full of emotion and surprise.
