For the first time in the country, double-decker buses have been introduced. The chassis have been transported from Sweden to Kaohsiung City, and the bus bodies are currently under construction. In the future, the operation rights will be held by Kaohsiung Bus. It is expected that the body construction will be completed by the end of June, with trial operations beginning in July. The city’s Transportation Bureau stated that the two open-top double-decker buses are mainly intended for tourism. The initial proposed route is a circular sightseeing bus line that travels from Dream Mall through Asia New Bay Area — including the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center, Xin Guang Pier, the Kaohsiung Public Library Headquarters, Pier-2 Art Center — and on to Hamasen and Xiziwan, then connecting to tourist spots such as Liuhe Night Market, City Light Corridor, New Juejiang Commercial District, and San Duo Commercial District.

The chassis of the two double-decker buses were imported from Sweden and have now arrived at the Gushan District plant in Kaohsiung City for body construction. In the future, these open-top double-decker buses will be the first of their kind to be introduced and operated in the country. The initial plan is to offer a one-day unlimited travel package.
The Transportation Bureau pointed out that the two double-decker buses will operate on a trial basis in July along a route that includes Dream Mall — Kaohsiung Exhibition Center — Xin Guang Pier — Pier-2 Special Zone — Xiziwan and other tourist attractions. In the future, the public can experience the urban scenery of Kaohsiung through this new mode of transport. Kaohsiung Bus Co. plans to collaborate with Kaohsiung’s characteristic attractions in late April, inviting the public to participate in designing bus body art based on the imagery of the harbor city. A design competition will also be held to increase engagement among residents and tourists. By incorporating creative submissions from the public, the first introduction of open-top double-decker buses in the country will feature unique and imaginative painted designs.
