Japanese retail giant Mitsui Group made its foray into Taiwan this year, opening its first large-scale shopping mall in Linkou District, New Taipei City, in January. Recently, it announced plans to build its second Mitsui Outlet Park at the Taichung Harbor area, eyeing the market potential of central Taiwan and aiming to create an “authentic outlet shopping destination.” The new park could begin operations as early as the end of 2018.

Mitsui Outlet Park in Linkou achieved nearly NT$1 billion in sales during its first month of operation, surpassing revenue expectations. The company is also continuing its expansion plans, targeting consumers in central Taiwan. The second Mitsui Outlet Park will cover approximately 18 hectares and is expected to feature more stores and restaurants to attract visitors.

Other developments in central Taiwan include the “Outlet Mall” planned by the Lihpao Group in Houli, which will feature not only shops and a Ferris wheel but also a racetrack. The ATT Group also plans to build hotels, shopping malls, and a Ferris wheel near the Taichung High-Speed Rail Station, which is expected to generate further buzz in central Taiwan.
