To celebrate the Year of the Dog, the city government specially applied for authorization from the United States, using Snoopy as the centerpiece of the four main lantern zones. This year’s four major lantern zones each have their own unique features: the Taoyuan Main Lantern Zone, the Guishan Lantern Zone, the Shuibiantou Lantern Zone, and the Luzhu Lantern Zone. A trial lighting event will be held on February 12.

This year’s lantern festival runs from the sixth day of the Lunar New Year through the seventeenth day, i.e., from February 21 to March 4, spanning 12 days. The event area spans three administrative districts: Taoyuan, Guishan, and Luzhu, featuring four themed lantern zones. These include the Taoyuan Main Lantern Zone in Sanmin Sports Park, the Guishan Lantern Zone at Guishan Xingyue Bridge, the Shuibiantou Lantern Zone at Taoyuan Bianzhou’s Meibridge, and the Luzhu Lantern Zone at Luzhu Zhumeng Bridge.

The adorable therapeutic mini lantern “Taohsi Dog” also makes its debut, designed based on the breed of quarantine dog used at Taoyuan Airport—the Beagle. The Taohsi Dog wears a gold medal with the Taoyuan City emblem on its chest, and its collar features eight coins symbolizing prosperity and wealth brought by the Year of the Dog. A limited edition of 40,000 lanterns will be given out during the festival (one per person, while supplies last).

Compared to previous years, this year’s Taoyuan Lantern Festival features many more days of celebration and a much larger event area. With an 8-kilometer riverside lantern display, visitors can experience the unique charm of Taiwan’s only riverside lantern festival. Those coming to enjoy the lanterns might want to plan a short Taoyuan trip—explore by day and admire the lanterns by night, enjoying a perfect mix of culture, shopping, lifestyle, and sports.
