Experience the Complete Presentation of Japan’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji Ukiyo-e in Taiwan

The specially curated exhibition “Japanese Ukiyo-e—Selected Masterpieces from the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum Collection” will be displayed at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, presenting 100 pieces that showcase the ukiyo-e woodblock prints popular during Japan’s Edo period, along with the historical background, cultural customs, and aesthetic traditions they represent. The collection also includes iconic works by renowned artists, such as Katsushika Hokusai’s famous series “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji,” known for its landscape art, and Utagawa Hiroshige’s “Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō,” alongside Kitagawa Utamaro’s bijin-ga (beautiful women portraits) and Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s comic prints.

The exhibition is divided into two major sections introducing “Edo Ukiyo-e” and “Kamigata Ukiyo-e.” In addition to landscapes and beautiful women paintings, it also features yakusha-e (actor prints) of kabuki performers from Kamigata (now the Kansai region). Nearly all the exhibited works are being shown in Taiwan for the first time, offering a rare and comprehensive look at the diverse themes of ukiyo-e and providing insight into the development history, social and cultural context, and the profound aesthetic significance of Japanese ukiyo-e.
