UNI-President Eagle Red Bean Products Expanded to 100 Hectares, Sourcing Taiwan Quinoa to Support Public Welfare

UNI-President’s eco-friendly farming initiatives have gained consumer support. Since 2016, the contract cultivation area for Eagle Red Beans, grown using land-friendly methods, has expanded from 25 hectares in 2016 to a total of 100 hectares this year. In addition to the existing seven products such as Eagle Red Bean Bread, Eagle Red Bean Dorayaki, and Eagle Red Bean Soup, the company plans to launch a new product, the Eagle Smile Red Bean Pie this year. At the end of last year, it also procured red quinoa to support public welfare. The Red Quinoa Toast launched in December last year has sold approximately 30,000 packages to date.

Eagle Red Beans have drawn more public attention to the relationship between agriculture and ecology, and have also helped promote the thriving development of eco-friendly farming. According to a survey by the Taiwan Raptor Research Group, the current eagle population across Taiwan has significantly increased compared to 2016, indicating that the development of eco-friendly agriculture has had a positive impact on the black kite population.

In early September last year, Council of Agriculture Director-General Chen Chiabing invited Eagle Red Bean farmer Lin Ching-yuan to assist in guiding the planting of Eagle Red Beans in the Wanzih Tou community of Wandan, Pingtung, which was affected by Typhoon Morakot. This year, UNI-President’s contract cultivation area for Eagle Red Beans will increase by approximately 15 hectares of Wandan Eagle Red Beans. Lin Ching-yuan will be responsible for procurement and the addition of production and sales traceability-certified plots. All harvested Wandan Eagle Red Beans will be supplied to UNI-President for sale.

To further promote eco-friendly farming, Lin Ching-yuan has also provided an area around the Donggang Eagle Red Bean fields free of charge, allowing the Pingtung Donggang Xinghe Community Development Association and the ^xiaozhen? Development Association (?) to grow crops such as red quinoa, without imposing any specific conditions. The communities did not request any compensation, so they decided to grow about 1 hectare, estimated to yield around 3,000–4,000 kilograms of red quinoa, to support public welfare efforts by providing free lunches for elderly and low-income residents in the community.
