The opening of the "Kyoto Railway Museum" has awakened fond memories of steam trains (abbreviated as "SL" in Japanese), and the sight of retro black steam locomotives speeding through mountain forests is a favorite among train enthusiasts. With nearly 10,000 stations across Japan, many steam trains are still in service. Travel operators have released a ranking of Japan’s top ten steam trains, featuring the nostalgic and Showa-era charm of the Shizuoka Prefecture SL Express, the five-carriage SL Yamagata, and the melodious whistle of the SL Banetsu Monogatari, among others.

1st Place: Japan’s Only Non-Stop Daily SL Express (Oigawa Railway 0 Series Steam Locomotive) Region: Shizuoka Prefecture
The top-ranked steam train is the well-known "SL Express," which offers stunning views of the Oigawa River countryside. The journey from Shin-Kanaya to Chubu Station takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The Showa-style carriages feature vintage seating and exclusive bento meals. It is Japan’s only steam train that runs every day of the year without breaks, making it a favorite among passengers.

2nd Place: The Five-Carriage SL Yamagata (JR West 0 Series Steam Locomotive) Region: Yamaguchi Prefecture ~ Shimane Prefecture
Ranked second, the SL Yamagata has only five carriages. Manufactured in 1937, it was once retired but returned to service in 1979. The route runs between Shin-Yamaguchi and Tsuwano, covering a one-way distance of about 63 kilometers in approximately 2 hours. It operates on weekends during March to November.

3rd Place: The "Graceful Lady" SL Banetsu Monogatari (JR East 0 Series Steam Locomotive) Region: Niigata Prefecture ~ Fukushima Prefecture
The "SL Banetsu Monogatari," running from Niigata Prefecture to Fukushima Prefecture, is called the "Graceful Lady" for its elegant appearance. Originally set to retire after its final run on the Banetsu West Line in 1969, it returned to service in April 1999. The long-absent whistle once again echoes along the Banetsu Line. It mainly operates on weekends during holidays from April to September.

4th Place: The Centennial Sightseeing Steam Train SL Hitoyoshi (JR Kyushu 0 Series Steam Locomotive) Region: Kumamoto Prefecture
The "SL Hitoyoshi," launched to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the full opening of the JR Hisatsu Line, not only features retro-style carriages but also includes comfortable observation lounges and buffet meals onboard. Passengers can leisurely admire the spectacular scenery of the Kuma River gorge while listening to the train’s whistle. It mainly operates on Fridays and holidays from April to November.
