The popular scenic spot Baxian Settlement in the middle of the water has announced a temporary closure.

Baxian Settlement in Jinshan has long been an idyllic destination in the hearts of travelers, especially the beautiful “Middle of the Water” attraction, which is a must-visit for visitors. However, as more tourists and photography enthusiasts visit and share their experiences, an increasing number of visitors have caused damage to the local ecology and disrupted residents' lives, as well as destroyed crops, much to the annoyance of the locals. In April 2016, some landowners began charging entry fees, which also sparked opposition and distress among other residents. On November 12, 2016, Baxian Settlement announced a temporary halt to public access, with residents signing a joint statement to boycott outside visitors.

Baxian Settlement in Jinshan, New Taipei City, is located beside Yangjin Highway in Yangmingshan National Park and preserves the rare large-scale terraced fields and traditional stone irrigation channels in northern Taiwan. Due to the high groundwater level, clear water quality, rich ecology, and abundant mountain stream water in the area, along with year-round mist, plus the nearby source of Baxian Hot Springs, aquatic plants, and earthworms—which create a lush, carpet-like greenery—the terraced field landscape, rich cultural elements, and ecological features of Baxian Settlement have become unique local assets.

The resulting backlash from local residents and disputes over fees have led to both locals and visitors losing out on a beautiful destination, representing a loss on both sides and leaving visitors feeling regretful.
