Breathtaking marine erosion wonders — Heping Island, the most mysterious spot on Taiwan’s northern coast

Taiwan has many natural wonders, but sites rich in mysterious history are few and far between. Gaining insight into the years and events they’ve witnessed offers a deeper and more astonishing perspective on these landscapes. On a corner of the northeast coast in Keelung lies an island connected to the main island of Taiwan only by Heping Bridge. Aside from its stunning marine erosion scenery, the island also features historical sites dating back to the 17th century.

The early Han Chinese settlement, along with Spanish and Japanese rule, left behind historical relics. From the earliest reinforced concrete bridge to mysterious inscriptions inside coastal caves, these sites are all important historic monuments. However, prolonged weathering has made them difficult to study, yet they undoubtedly add a layer of mystery to this spectacular scenery.
