Located in Fengshan District, Kaohsiung, the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) not only provides a venue for professional performing arts from both domestic and international sources, but also serves as a key driver in cultivating national aesthetic appreciation. The latest schedule for the opening of the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts has been released. Yesterday, prospective artistic director Chien Wen-pin stated that according to the Ministry of Culture’s plan, construction will be completed this October, followed by acceptance inspections, optimization, and trial operations. The official opening is expected in October 2018.

The Dutch architectural firm Mecanoo, led by Francine Houben, stood out among 44 entries from around the world and took on the challenge of creating this contemporary, multifunctional theater complex. Surrounded by greenery, its soundwave-inspired exterior and freeform white wave-like structure resemble a giant manta ray, flowing gracefully into the ground and blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment — a work that is both avant-garde and ecologically conscious.

The National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts includes four indoor performance venues: the Opera House, Concert Hall, Playhouse, and Recital Hall, as well as an outdoor theater, public facilities such as an open plaza, restaurants, cultural and art shops, a multipurpose hall, a rooftop observation deck, and parking lots.
The Weiwuying Arts and Cultural Center Preparatory Office, which is in charge of the hardware engineering, stated that while the external structure is largely complete, interior work is still underway. In addition to meeting the Ministry's requirements for "quality assurance" and "faithful execution," the team is now also committed to completing the project "on schedule" in order to meet public expectations.
