Top 10 Surnames, Top 10 Attractions, Free Entry, Generational Memories – Household Registration Exhibition Offers Discounts

From July 10 to 23, the New Taipei City Civil Affairs Bureau is holding a two-week “Generational Memory Household Registration Exhibition” in the city government lobby. In addition to showcasing historical civil registration artifacts from various household offices and a special exhibition on Japanese-born Taiwanese, it also features, for the first time, a collaboration with clan associations to plan “Theme Days” for the top 10 surnames: Chen, Lin, Li, Huang, Zhang, Wang, Wu, Liu, Cai, and Yang. The event offers discounts on visits to 10 major attractions including Fort San Domingo and local delicacies, allowing visitors to explore the charm of household registration history while enjoying travel across New Taipei.

The top 10 surnames in Taiwan have the highest population distribution in New Taipei City, with a total exceeding 2 million people. Through this 10-surname-themed exhibition, visitors can learn more about the stories of each surname’s pioneering efforts in New Taipei, as well as the resilience and growth demonstrated by these family lineages. In addition, through collaborations with various cross-department venues and tourist factories, the event promotes interaction among different clan associations and strengthens the bonds within these communities.

The top 10 surnames in New Taipei City are, in order, Chen, Lin, Li, Huang, Zhang, Wang, Wu, Liu, Cai, and Yang. These surnames account for 17.07% of the national top 10 surnames’ population and make up as much as 53.32% of New Taipei City’s population. Among them, the most common surname, Chen, has 454,157 individuals, representing 11.43% of the city’s population, while the 10th most common, Yang, has 100,063 people, accounting for 2.52%.

This year’s 10 Surname Theme Days link each surname’s homophone with New Taipei’s unique attractions and culinary delights. On the first day, Chen Surname Day, Chen clan members can present their ID card for free entry to Fort San Domingo in Tamsui. For Lin Surname Day, the Lin Ben Yuan Garden Mansion and Pinglin Tea Museum are open for free to those with the Lin surname. Meanwhile, Zhang Surname Day features a 50% discount on Huzi Zhang braised pork rice. Additionally, general visitors—those not among the top 10 surnames—who take photos and check in at the exhibition area can also enjoy these various discounts.
