The UK's Big Ben to remain silent for 4 years during renovation

The UK House of Commons has announced that London’s iconic landmark Big Ben will be largely silent for the next four years due to renovation work, with the bell ceasing to chime from noon on the 21st of this month. Weighing 13.7 tonnes, Big Ben has been chiming for 157 years. The bell’s hammer is set to be dismantled, but the chimes can still be heard during important events such as New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Big Ben’s clock will be disassembled, with each gear inspected and repaired. The four clock faces will also be cleaned and restored, while the cast iron frame will be refurbished and the hands removed for repair. One clock face will continue to operate and keep time quietly, powered initially by a modern electric motor until the original winding mechanism is reinstated.
