Taipei 2017 Universiade athletes walk the red carpet as Ko Wen-je makes an appearance to distribute limited-edition mini flags

A great opportunity to see the 2017 Taipei Universiade athletes up close — Taiwan’s heroes who participated in this international event gathered on the evening of August 31 at Taipei City Hall’s front square and walked the red carpet set up on Xin Ren’ai Road, giving fans this once-in-a-lifetime chance to cheer for Taiwan’s heroes once again and share in the glory and joy together.

The Taiwan delegation of the Universiade boldly claimed 26 golds, 34 silvers, and 30 bronzes in our home games, ranking third in total medals — the most outstanding performance in Taiwan’s Universiade history. The successful conclusion of this event is not only thanks to the hard work of the Taiwan delegation but also to the cheering crowds outside the venue, the unsung heroes behind this event.

Immediately following the hero parade was a grand celebration held at Taipei City Hall Plaza, the endpoint of the parade. The event featured speeches by gold medalist Kuo Hsing-chun, who broke the world record and claimed gold in the 58kg category, and javelin athlete Cheng Chao-tsung, who set a new Asian record, representing the athletes. Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je also expressed his deepest gratitude to the Universiade athletes, selfless volunteers, staff members, and the public who cheered for the athletes. Sports Administration Director-General Lin Te-fu then led 12 young athletes in presenting the “Taiwan Heroes” flag to these shining stars, expressing hopes that Taiwan will “set off again” and continue to shine on the global sports stage.

The 2017 Taipei Universiade “Taiwan Heroes Parade” celebration event saw the parade convoy arrive at Taipei City Hall’s front square at 5:30 PM on August 31. Organizers began a series of warm-up activities at 4:30 PM, featuring exciting performances by Shih Hsin University’s competitive cheerleading squad and Kainan University’s marching band and color guard team, along with screenings of Universiade videos that looked back on the highlights of the event. Limited-edition mini flags were also distributed on site.
 

The Universiade mascot, Bruin the Bear, has become a top city tourism ambassador for Taipei due to its immense popularity.
