Worried about eating alone or concerned about what others might think? Besides the recently popular one-person seating at Ichiran Ramen, some businesses are now challenging the solo dining experience. Following their 2016 "Dining in the Dark" event, the Surprise Lab. team launched a dining space designed specifically for individuals — “table for ONE” — in the fall of 2017.

Participants in “table for ONE” are required to switch their phones to airplane mode, limiting internet and messaging apps during the meal. The reservation system does not allow bookings for more than one person, and all seats are individual, with no options for sharing or combining tables to ensure the best solo dining experience.

The “table for ONE” space has 24 individual seats, each facing different directions with unique views. The set menu is based on five concepts of solitude, divided into five courses, with each dish paired with a specially designed interactive activity.
