When it comes to soaking in hot springs in Yilan, many people’s first thought is Jiaoxi Hot Springs. But in Toucheng, also in Yilan, there’s a very special kind of “iron spring” that’s also highly popular among hot spring enthusiasts. In Japan, iron spring is called “tetsu no yu,” and it’s also been given the title of “Women’s Spring.” This is because iron spring is rich in iron minerals, and it’s widely believed among the public that regular soaking can turn the body’s constitution more alkaline—hence the nickname “Boy-Bearing Spring,” which attracts many hopeful parents-to-be.

Located at the northeastern tip of Yilan, the “Rio Ocean Hot Spring Hotel” features an iron spring in its resort that even has a beautiful name: “Ocean Golden Hot Spring.” It gushes from 800 meters deep within underground rock layers, and the spring quality is excellent. A hotel employee revealed: “This spring water is amazing. When it first comes out, it’s colorless and transparent like clear water, but once it touches the air and gets oxidized, the water turns yellowish-brown—very unique.” It’s precisely this mineral-rich deep yellow hue, which looks as shiny as gold, that earned it the name “Golden Hot Spring.”

Unlike Jiaoxi’s Beauty Spring, which is a colorless and odorless sodium bicarbonate spring, the iron spring here offers a unique soaking experience. Take a small sip, and you’ll notice the water even has a slightly salty and bitter taste of the sea. Since the spring water is rich in iron ions, it’s said that frequent soaking can improve blood-forming functions and is beneficial for menopausal disorders, uterine development issues, and eczema.
