As 2012 draws to a close and you're struggling to find a relaxing getaway without taking long leave, why not take a short trip to Beibu Township in Hsinchu County? Enjoy a mini adventure filled with cultural charm, local snacks, and lush greenery.
A great year-end destination
Beibu Old Street in Hsinchu isn’t the earliest developed area in the city, but due to early settlement reasons and the need for defense, the houses here are closely packed together. Stroll along the old street, wander through various historic sites, sample traditional Hakka snacks, crunch into the local specialty stone persimmon cakes, then head to Green World Eco Farm to play with alpacas and explore nature—recharge both your body and soul.

Attraction Story
Located in Beibu Township, Hsinchu County, Beibu Old Street is a historic area with over a century of heritage, home to many unique historic sites. Once a base for Hakka immigrants from Guangdong Province, the area is rich in Hakka culture—you can enjoy authentic traditional Hakka ground tea. Starting in October each year, it’s the season for Beibu’s special stone persimmon cakes. Due to the area’s unique terrain, the strong “Moguageng” winds help produce this local delicacy.

Beibu Old Street is always bustling with shops and visitors, especially on weekends. You’ll hear shop owners promoting Hakka ground tea, salted pork, persimmon cakes, and other treats—it’s quite lively. Since my student days, I’ve visited countless times, but even now, whenever I have time, I still like to come here. To see if anything new has popped up. Aside from the food, there are also plenty of historic sites: Citian Temple, Jiang Xin’s Residence, Tianshui Hall… Not all are open to the public, but admiring these traditional buildings from the outside is also quite a treat.

Attraction Story
Chewy and flavorful |?酰? (presumably a dish), a true representation of southern Taiwanese cuisine. Located in “Old Street Snacks” in the area, it offers delicious local flavors. Dishes like braised pork rice and black sesame mochi have simple yet rich tastes. The restaurant is always busy during meal times, which shows how popular it is. I've been here many times since my school days, but I still drop by when I can. Just to see if there's anything new. Aside from the great food, there are also historic buildings nearby. Though not all are open to the public, just admiring them from the outside is quite charming.
Qingqing says～
I once visited a snack shop called “Old Street Snacks,” and ordered their signature dish. It was a very simple yet tasty local rice dish. There were braised pork, pickled vegetables, and other goodies. Their black sesame mochi is especially famous. When in season, it’s incredibly fragrant. The soup selection is limited, so both times we came, we ordered pig’s blood soup. The tangy pickled vegetables paired with the rich pig’s blood soup—absolutely amazing.
