Ahead of the New Year’s holiday, the Sun Moon Lake Gondola launched a brand-new transparent “crystal” cabin that offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the lake and mountains. Suspended 50 stories above the ground over the Smile Valley, the glass floor provides an unobstructed view that challenges passengers’ courage while giving them the sensation of flying.

“The Ostrich Takes the Gondola” is the latest promotional video from the Sun Moon Lake Gondola, guaranteed to bring a smile. The ostrich wants to fly, and the transparent crystal gondola makes the impossible possible. Plus, riding in the crystal cabin feels like floating in the air, with a gentle breeze drifting in through the windows — it’s just like flying.

The Sun Moon Lake Crystal Gondola was officially launched on the 29th, offering free rides to seniors from the “Live Beautifully Care Association.” Sitting in the transparent-floor crystal gondola, many exclaimed, “Never ridden anything like this, even at my age,” and found the modern “aerial lift” truly amusing. Lin Huifang, 80 years old, said it was her first time viewing the lake surface directly from an altitude of 1,000 meters. Though her feet went numb, she said it was an experience worth trying.

Huang Ruiqi, manager of Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, stated that to celebrate the New Year and the new gondola’s launch, not only will there be no fare increase for the Sun Moon Lake Gondola, but tickets to Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village are also on special offer. From December 30 to January 15, 2018, tickets are available for just NT$650, and include a same-day ride on the Sun Moon Lake Gondola — a welcome gift from the transparent crystal cabin.

Huang Ruiqi added that the lake view from the Sun Moon Lake Gondola has been rated three stars by the Michelin Green Guide. Since its opening at the end of 2009, the gondola has carried 15 million passengers as of the end of 2017, making it an ideal choice for travel during the New Year’s holiday.

The Sun Moon Lake Gondola is also running a share, check-in, and tagging campaign. During the gondola’s opening period, simply share, take photos, check in, and tag keywords such as “Sun Moon Lake Crystal Gondola,” “SML crystal cabin,” “transparent gondola,” “crystal gondola,” or “transparent flight” to enter a weekly lucky draw.
