The newly renovated Fugui Fish Market officially opens on the 25th, with 1-dollar auctions to attract visitors

The 28-year-old Fugui Fish Market closed in March, making way for the “Fugui Fishing Port Seafood Sales Center” featuring a “Mexican hat” design. After two months of trial operation, it will officially open on the 25th. To draw in crowds, vendors are offering promotions such as 1-dollar auctions and quiz contests.

The old Fugui Fish Market was a traditional iron-sheet market that had become dilapidated after years of exposure to sea winds. To revitalize the fishing port’s tourism, the Tourism Bureau invited a Spanish designer to rebuild it. The roof features 50 steel “Mexican hat” structures as a key highlight, while four giant crab sculptures—each about 2 meters tall—at the two entrances of the fishing port, along with the “Mexican hats,” will form a new landmark.

The New Taipei City Agriculture Bureau stated that the new fish market includes 42 stalls in Building A for fresh seafood, while Building B houses cooked seafood services, seafood restaurants, cafes, and wood-fired pizza. Selling freshly caught live fish is a major feature. To prevent unscrupulous vendors from shortchanging customers, all stalls are now required to clearly display prices, with scales placed in visible areas. Additionally, three public scales are available for use.

Aside from sampling fresh seafood, the area around the new fish market also offers family-friendly facilities such as a children's play zone and a marine life touch pool for leisurely strolls or parent-child activities. Wang Zhaohua, head of the Fisheries and Fishing Port Management Division at the Agriculture Bureau, said the new Fugui Fish Market operates from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. During holidays, if there is a larger crowd, vendors may extend their operating hours as needed.
