Dapeng Bay Oyster Shell Island Reopens; Delicious Grilled Oysters Welcome Visitors

Popular lakeside attraction in Donggang, Pingtung County, Dapeng BayOyster Shell IslandAfter more than eight months of renovation, it has recently reopened, and the island’s famous oyster snacks have once again attracted many food enthusiasts. The Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area Administration stated that many tourists flock to Oyster Shell Island specifically to try the grilled oysters. All oyster dishes here are freshly dug and cooked, offering a sweet and fresh taste. The plump oysters become even more mouthwatering after being pan-seared.

Oyster Shell Island was closed temporarily last August after being hit by a typhoon, which damaged and tilted the floating platforms on the island. The Dapeng Bay Administration noted that after Typhoon Tembin severely impacted Oyster Shell Island last August, it was closed for repairs. In addition to reinforcing the floating platforms, efforts were made to refill and clear oyster shells on the island, restoring it to its former state. Vendors have since reopened for business, welcoming visitors to enjoy the local cuisine.

It is understood that in the early days, oyster farming and cage fish farming were prevalent in the waters of Dapeng Bay. Oyster farmers used to dump discarded oyster shells in the waters of Nanping Village, which over time accumulated to form Oyster Shell Island. As Dapeng Bay transitioned into a tourism-focused destination, although the oyster farming industry is no longer active, traditional floating oyster racks are still set up on the island. This allows visitors to experience firsthand the hard work of oyster farmers and even try their hand at shucking oysters.

Currently, all Dapeng Bay cruise boats pass by Oyster Shell Island and stop for about 20 minutes to allow passengers to enjoy local delicacies. Travelers can contact cruise operators to arrange their trips.
