Taichung Hong Kong-style Dim Sum: Pin Jia Café
This “Pin Jia Café” isn’t too far from my home. I’d been keeping an eye on it since it opened, but none of my friends who had tried it seemed to have great things to say, so I was hesitant to come. But lately, tons of people have been recommending “Pin Jia Café” saying the food is good and the prices are reasonable, so I gave it a try—and came back twice in a row.

“Pin Jia Café” is located on Rehe Road in Beitun District, right across from the Folklore Park. There’s a parking lot underground at the park, so drivers won’t have trouble finding a spot. Next door is the popular “Hanabi French Pastry”—if you’re up for it, you can finish lunch and then go for afternoon tea.

I think a TV show featured them recently...

Compared to other cha chaan tengs, the dining space at “Pin Jia Café” isn’t very big—about the size of a typical small Hong Kong-style tea house...

Menu…

Famous Hainanese Chicken – $180, this seems to be their signature dish. The chicken is quite tender, served on a bed of greens, and the sauce isn’t overly salty. It’s pretty tasty...

Red Fermented Tofu Braised Pork Knuckle – $220, the pork is tender and soft with just the right level of saltiness. The texture is nice...

Fermented Tofu Stir-fried Water Spinach – $120, I found this one average, not something I’d particularly recommend... (The last time I ordered the Oyster Sauce Tender Chinese Kale, it was also average and the portion was really small...)

Pan-fried Chive Cakes – $70, the skin is quite thin, and the filling is chives and ground pork...

Lotus Leaf Glutinous Rice Chicken – $95, the rice is well-seasoned, not too mushy, and you get two pieces per serving—which shows good value...

Crystal Shrimp Dumplings – $115, I liked these. The wrappers are thin and chewy, and each dumpling has one whole shrimp inside—the texture is springy and delicious...

Golden Lava Custard Buns – $85, be careful when you open them because the lava filling might spill out and burn you. The flavor is rich and aromatic, and the bun is fluffy—pretty good.

Golden Sesame Balls – $85, I got these with a voucher from a previous purchase. They’re quite tasty, but the filling is the same as the Golden Lava Custard Buns, so I wouldn’t order both...

Clay Pot Rice with Chinese Sausage – $180, my favorite part of this dish is the Chinese broccoli...

Iced Lemon Tea / Silk Stocking Milk Tea – $75, I prefer the milk tea—it’s tastier. The iced lemon tea doesn’t have much lemon, nothing like “Kimpo Café”...

Mango Pomelo Sago – $80, it’s okay, but not very authentic Hong Kong-style...
Based on my two visits, the food is pretty decent and the prices aren’t high. Last time I came on a weekday lunch, there were quite a few customers—business seems good. If you’re in the Beitun area and want to try Hong Kong-style dim sum, “Pin Jia Café” is worth considering. Then head next door for some dessert.
