Besides its expansive rice field landscapes, many don’t realize that Taitung’s Brown Avenue is also a great spot to admire a “rapeseed flower sea.” Tiny yellow blossoms dot the fields on either side, creating a vast, beautiful golden carpet—a burst of springtime warmth in winter. Located in Chishang, Taitung, Brown Avenue became famous after a commercial starring Takeshi Kaneshiro was filmed here. However, not many people know it’s also a hot spot for viewing rapeseed flower seas. Yesterday (the 23rd), netizens captured the beginning of this golden floral display, which is still relatively unknown to most. Countless tiny rapeseed flowers form a sweeping sea of blooms, presenting a dazzling golden scene set against blue skies, white clouds, and rolling mountains—painting a uniquely winter rural landscape.

The rapeseed flower season runs from December each year through January and February of the following year. According to the Huatung Valley official website, not only in Chishang, Taitung, but also extending to Luye, as well as Fuli and Yuli in Hualien County, farmers begin their fallow period in December. During this idle farming season, they plant rapeseed as a green manure crop, which lasts until January and February of the next year.
