New Check-in Spot in Sanchi: A Dreamy Ocean Comes to Life on a Painted Rural Farm

A vibrant ocean scene has appeared in the countryside—murals have given the community a new lease on life. Located in Sanhe Community, Sanchi District, New Taipei City, the area has been actively revitalizing its rural landscape and cultural industries since being approved for the Rural Regeneration Plan by the New Taipei City Government in 2014 (103 in the Republic of China calendar). This year, through the New Taipei City Rural Regeneration Implementation Program, Sanhe Community has set up the “Sanhe SanSheng Agricultural Workshop – Sanhe Yingzhi Pavilion” near the entrance of the SanSheng Trail. Themed around marine ecological scenes along the coastline and local crops, it serves as a new destination for future experience activities and photo opportunities for visitors.

Liu Xiufeng, chairperson of the Sanhe Community Development Association, said the community repurposed an abandoned space that was once a warehouse for tea factories back in the 1940s and 1950s. After removing stains and grease from the walls, they repainted and beautified the exterior. Professional mural artists then sketched the designs and made samples, and with over a month of collaborative effort by community residents, the rural wall murals were completed together.

In addition to fitting the local environment, the mural content centers on marine ecological scenes along the coastline and incorporates local crops (such as white bamboo shoots, pumpkins, eggplants, watermelons, etc.) painted as various fun sea creatures. This creates a youthful, natural, and joyful visual experience. It not only revitalizes old spaces and enhances the quality of the local environment but also showcases the rich rural vitality of Sanhe Community.

Aside from the painted walls, residents also handmade DIY tables, benches, display racks, and installed flower stand nets. They planted a variety of distinctive plants (such as cherry blossoms, wisteria, agave, and fireball flowers) around the experience activity site. By arranging simple rest areas instead of constructing artificial buildings, they are committed to preserving the local ecological environment, allowing visitors to enjoy an authentic rural atmosphere.

Lee Wen, Director of the Agriculture Bureau, stated that they hope to transform the community through the revitalization of rural landscapes, creating new spots for experience activities and aiming to become a popular online check-in highlight. This will help promote diversified development in the rural industry. Visitors are welcome to explore the stunning scenery around Sanchi Tianxinzǐ Shuizhongyang when visiting Sanchi, and also to experience the diverse features of the SanSheng Trail and the “Sanhe Yingzhi Pavilion” in Sanhe Community, embracing the unique rural charm of Sanhe.

Note: The name “Sanhe Yingzhi Pavilion” combines the name of Sanchi District and the famous cherry blossom scenery along the SanSheng Trail. The character “栈 (zhàn),” meaning pavilion, is used with the hope that it becomes a great spot for visitors to stay, relax, and unwind. It is also a homophone for “赞 (zàn),” which means “praise” or “like.”
