Incredible！There’s actually a seaside library in China?

Seaside spots usually have cafés, but who would’ve thought there could be a library? On a long stretch of beach, where no one else is around, stands a concrete-walled building shaped like a box. Standing alone against the sea breeze, it comes fromChinaand is the work of Vector Architects (直向建筑).

The Seaside Library by Sanlian, which opened in May this year, is located within the Aranya Resort community on the Golden Coast, near the Changli International Sandboarding Center, about 500 meters north of the center. Passing through a low doorway, you’ll find a two-story space with a simple and minimalist interior design, spanning nearly 4,800 square feet. The side facing the sea features a full wall of floor-to-ceiling glass. The two-story design concept ensures that people inside aren’t blocked by those sitting in front. The structure is also designed like a grandstand, with the sea as the “performance” unfolding before the audience.

The high ceilings, along with holes in the roof, allow natural light patches to stream into the library around 3 p.m. for about one to two hours, creating the most natural and soft lighting. In the activity room, the morning light is warm on the east side and cool on the west, with the pattern reversing in the afternoon. In such a comfortable space, reading might not even be the main activity—feeling the proximity to the sea and engaging in quiet contemplation may be more important than reading itself.
