Seasonal Limited: View the Blue Tears in Matsu

The coast of Tai O in Hong Kong once witnessed the "Blue Tears," sparking a wave of interest among "tear-chasers." But it turns out thatMatsu’s Beihai Tunnel on Nangan Island had already launched night-time "Blue Tears" viewing tours last year. This year, the tourism bureau has added more dates, from April 1 to October 31.

From approximately April to September each year,Matsu’s coastal waters often glow with waves of sapphire-blue light. This unique marine phenomenon is referred to as the "Blue Tears," which in recent years has attracted many "tear-chasers" to admire or photograph it, becoming aMatsutreasure in its tourism offerings.

However, seeing the Blue Tears inMatsudepends on factors such as tides, sea currents, and wind direction. But compared to the open sea, the probability is higher inside Beihai Tunnel. During the tour, visitors paddle through the pitch-dark tunnel in flat-bottomed boats, where countless blue lights float on the water—a breathtaking sight.

This year, boat operators have invested in purchasing four new, wider boats with more seating. Additionally, indicator lights have been installed at tunnel bends to enhance safety. The "Blue Tears" phenomenon occurs when dinoflagellates, ostracods, or bioluminescent plankton in the sea emit light due to disturbance from the tides.
