【Travel Short】Red Telephone Booths Transformed into Charging & Wi-Fi Stations—No Worries When Traveling to London!

When traveling these days, just one smartphone is enough. Food, accommodation, transportation, and check-ins all rely on it. But the biggest fear is running out of battery or not having internet access upon arrival—it’s hard to even find nearby food options. But if you visitLondon, you’ll notice that there are fewer red phone booths around, but they’ve been transformed into multifunctional stations. These new booths offer temporary charging services and high-speed free Wi-Fi, with data speeds expected to reach 1Gbps, capable of supporting hundreds of users simultaneously. Additionally, they feature touch-screen tablet interfaces for map searches, directions, and free calls.

The UKtelecom company BT will launch a new service called LinkUK, installingLondonLink phone booths on major streets. These provide temporary charging services as well as high-speed free wireless internet, with data speeds expected to reach 1Gbps, and can support hundreds of users at once. Furthermore, touch-screen tablet interfaces will be installed to offer map queries, directions, and free calling services.

Most importantly, the Link phone booths won’t cost taxpayers a penny. Instead, they will partner with advertising company Primesight to generate revenue from 55-inch dual displays on each booth, using ad income to support the project.

It is expected that 100 new-style phone booths will be installed in 2017, with the possibility of reaching 750 within a few years. So when you visitLondonin the future, you won’t have to worry about your phone dying or getting lost in the city.
