Trash Collection for "Beach Currency": Little Liuqiu to Issue in July

While modern society promotes digital currency,Taiwanthe island of Little Liuqiu is taking a different path by issuing "beach currency."

However, this unique local currency isn’t something you can buy — you’ll need to collect at least 2 kilograms of trash to earn it.

The currency is made from blue and green fragments of crushed glass bottles, adorned with various turtle designs and set against the ocean scenery of Little Liuqiu. It is launched in collaboration between the marine conservation-focused "Haiyong Workshop" and the Penghu Management Office.

Though small in size — just 12 square kilometers — Little Liuqiu is home to 163 sea turtles, making it the island with the highest density of sea turtles in the world. However, with increasing tourist numbers and ecological changes, the marine environment is starting to be affected. The initiative aims to highlight the ongoing ecological crisis faced by the area.

The project is set to launch in July 2017. For every 2 kilograms of trash collected and brought to the beach cleanup, participants will receive one piece of beach currency, which can be used at 35 shops across the island.
