The World’s First Traditional Japanese-Style Starbucks Debuts in Kyoto

Many Hong Kong travelers to Japan make it a point to visit Starbucks to try its limited-time or regional drinks. Located near Kiyomizu-dera Temple, the Starbucks at Kyoto’s Ninen-zaka is the first to incorporate traditional Japanese aesthetics. The Ninen-zaka branch is housed in a century-old machiya townhouse, a significant cultural property in the area.

This Starbucks in Kyoto’s Ninen-zaka not only retains the original building’s exterior but also honors Japanese tradition. Customers are required to remove their shoes before entering the second-floor tatami seating area, where they can enjoy coffee atop Kyoto Tango region woven seat cushions, creating a richly traditional Japanese atmosphere.
