The New Paradise for Retired Oxen — “Home for Old Oxen” Invites You to Meet the Cows

Hardworking oxen that have toiled their whole lives can now enjoy their well-deserved retirement. In recent years, Tainan City’s Agriculture Bureau has promoted the “Home for Old Oxen,” a retirement center for aged working oxen. Aside from providing comprehensive care for these retired animals, the site also showcases a variety of rural farming tools, historical images of Taiwanese cattle, the evolution of oxcarts, and other elements of rural culture.

The Home for Old Oxen was established in 2010 (the 99th year of the Republic of China) within the Deyuanpi Natural Ecological Leisure Area in Liuying District, Tainan City. As Taiwan’s agriculture has increasingly replaced oxen with machinery for plowing in recent years, the center was created to allow retired working oxen to live out their days in comfort. It also serves purposes related to animal protection and life education by providing shelter for retired cattle and ensuring they receive proper care.

Visitors to the site can not only observe the daily lives of the oxen but also personally feed them fresh grass and watch them stroll leisurely across the vast fields.
The public can also learn about Taiwan’s unique “ox culture,” including valuable cultural and historical materials such as cattle registration during the Japanese colonial period, cattle mouth rings, iron-shod cattle, cattle markets (牛墟), and hoof prints. Rare traditional farming tools from earlier times — such as five-toothed rakes, two-pronged forks, centipede rakes, ox yokes, and cowbells — are also on display here.
