Nantou Tianchi Mountain Lodge Reopens: Green Architecture and Breathtaking Viewing Platform

The “Tianchi Mountain Lodge,” a midway station along the historic Nenggao Mountain Trail connecting Nantou’s Ren’ai Township and Hualien’s Tongmen area, has recently begun trial operations after two years of renovation. The entire lodge adopts eco-friendly green building design, can accommodate 100 guests, and offers dormitory-style rooms for 4, 8, and 12 people with hot water supply. The daily rate is NT$450 per person on weekdays. The lodge also features a specially designed viewing platform, allowing visitors to enjoy the surrounding mountain scenery.

The Nantou Forest District Office stated that the rebuilt Tianchi Mountain Lodge utilizes natural lighting, with photovoltaic panels installed on the roof to absorb solar energy for electricity, providing hot water and nighttime lighting. The specially designed sloped roof allows rain and snow to slide off naturally. The lodge is located near two waterfalls, ensuring an ample water supply even during droughts, making it a true eco-friendly green building.

Located in a wind-sheltered valley on the western side of Nenggao North Peak at an altitude of 2,860 meters, Tianchi Mountain Lodge differs from other lodges that serve purely as accommodations. It features a dedicated viewing platform and large, operable glass windows, allowing hikers to take in the panoramic views of high-altitude clouds and mist. The Forest District Office noted that the new lodge’s entrance corridor is spacious, with added public gathering spaces, tea service, and seating to offer hikers a more comfortable experience.

Currently, the lodge does not provide meals but has a cooking area where visitors must prepare their own food. Reservations are required 45 days in advance online, with a lottery system for bookings one month before the stay. The weekday rate is NT$450 per person, and NT$480 per person on holidays. Additionally, the Forest District Office reminds the public that the Nenggao Trail and roads around Tianchi Mountain Lodge are narrow, and vehicles (including bicycles) are not permitted. Visitors should take note.
