Surviving Cancer Together, a Couple Married for 50 Years Renew Vows in Guam with “I Do” Again

With the crystal-clear blue waters of Tumon Bay framed outside the floor-to-ceiling windows as their backdrop, the couple standing inside Guam’s Saint Victor Catholic Church yesterday (28th) to receive the priest’s witness and blessing were truly special — they are Mr. and Mrs. Chan, who have been married for 50 years. Recently, they were selected from the Guam Visitors Bureau’s “Say ‘I Do’ Again” campaign. This vow renewal ceremony celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary brought their six daughters, who live all over the world, together again for the first time in 17 years. A large extended family gathering of over 20 people spanning three generations witnessed this touching moment inside the church. Seizing this rare opportunity, the Chans also celebrated a romantic second honeymoon in Guam. The rarely reunited family also enjoyed a group trip around the island, creating sweet and unforgettable memories filled with delicious food and stunning scenery.

Guam is a dream destination for many couples about to tie the knot, and in recent years, it has also attracted numerous married couples who choose to reaffirm their wedding vows in the island’s beautiful churches, sharing those precious moments with children and grandchildren. This time, Mr. and Mrs. Chan, dressed once again in their wedding attire, have spent most of their lives supporting each other and raising six daughters, mirroring Taiwan’s development over the past half-century. After surviving cancer and overcoming life’s toughest trials, hearing the words “I do” once more from their lifelong partner brought them overwhelming emotion and gratitude. Their story also serves as a perfect example of marital values for all the younger guests present.

The 3-night, 5-day vow renewal journey included a vow renewal ceremony at Saint Victor Catholic Church, where celebrity Ella recently shot her wedding photos. The extended family also took full advantage of this rare reunion to explore Guam. They shopped tax-free at high-end malls, and made sure to sample some of the island’s most highly rated restaurants — a delicious culinary adventure in Guam indeed.
