From September to November, when the autumn air is crisp and clear, uncover the breathtaking beauty of Nepal — home to some of the world’s most dramatic and rugged mountain landscapes, as well as deeply traditional cultural heritage. And now is the ideal time for hiking and mountaineering.

In Nepal, hiking and mountaineering have become one of the country's main sources of economic income, but this has only been the case in recent decades. In 1965, a British colonel from the fearless Gurkha army, J. O. M. Roberts, pioneered mountaineering tourism in Nepal. That year, as he traveled through the world’s highest Himalayan mountain range, he was struck by the towering peaks and pristine, unpolluted scenery. He had a sudden inspiration — that if people could breathe such pure, cool air and become one with nature, they would surely enjoy it as much as he did. So he began planning trekking routes, using Sherpas as guides and animals like mules to carry supplies for trekkers. This kind of trip quickly gained popularity among nature-loving hikers, and visitor numbers have continued to rise. Last year alone, nearly 600,000 travelers visited Nepal.

In the early days, going hiking in Nepal was as difficult as reaching the heavens, especially for foreign tourists or those without mountaineering experience. Hiking in high-altitude and remote mountain areas seemed like an unattainable dream. But over the years, the region’s mountaineering facilities and infrastructure have steadily improved, making it easier than ever to realize the dream of climbing the Himalayas.

Generally speaking, there are two types of trekking in Nepal: the easier and more relaxed option is called teahouse trekking(Teahouse Trekking), where trekkers walk along well-marked trails during the day and stay overnight in mountain lodges or guesthouses along the way. Accommodation ranges from clean and comfortable to basic and minimal, so trekkers are advised to bring their own essentials. The other option is camping trekking, which allows for more flexible route planning. A full local support team, including guides and porters, helps carry all necessary camping gear such as tents, food, fuel, and other supplies, so trekkers can travel light. This offers a more free-spirited trekking experience. Both options have their pros and cons, and trekkers can choose based on their personal preferences and needs.

Most travelers first fly into Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. They then make final arrangements and purchase any necessary gear in Kathmandu before taking a bus or domestic flight to Pokhara to begin their trek.

Nowadays, Nepal has developed dozens of trekking routes starting from various points, tailored to different scenic areas. Therefore, trekkers are advised to do their homework in advance to choose the route that best matches their expectations and physical ability.

Speaking of preparation, there are several crucial aspects that must not be overlooked. First and foremost, it’s essential to arrive at your destination a few days before the planned trek to allow your body to gradually acclimatize to the high altitude. Those planning long treks or challenges at even higher altitudes should arrive even earlier. Additionally, visas and trekking permits must be applied for in advance according to your specific trekking itinerary. Different types of permits are required based on the trekking format, price, route, and mountain area.

Featured by popular booking websites, carefully selected accommodations in Nepal are the top choice for travelers during those initial days of acclimatization, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in Nepal’s rich, vibrant ancient culture and unique humanistic charm.
